As we read the law in its historical context, we note several features. First, it was given to ethnic Israelites. Yahweh addresses the Torah to “the house of Jacob” and “the children of Israel” (Exod. 19:3), whom He had physically delivered from slavery in Egypt (Exod. 19:4; 20:2).
